Kentucky Derby

One day we toured the Kentucky Derby Museum and Churchill Downs where the race is held each May.

Tickets for the derby sell out years in advance. The infield area is sold for $40 for anyone who wants to come and party but they are not able to view the race except on big screens. All of the seats are outdoors---no air conditioning.

Super Saver owned by Winstar won this year. (Winstar is owned by Texans---they have the winningest horses for the past 5 years) The local Kroger down the street does the flowers.

Every woman who comes to the derby must wear a hat. This is a custom that has carried over from England. Some of the outstanding ones are displayed here in the museum. Ladies have their hats designed and then build an outfit around the hat. There are several designers in Kentucky. Hats usually sell from $100 to a couple of thousand.
