During our stay in California, on scenic drives, in beach towns, even in the mountains, we have seen so many old cars being driven around especially on the weekends when everyone seems to get out and enjoy them. We are in Bishop, CA now over close to Death Valley and Mammoth Lakes area. They had a car cruise-in this weekend and classic cars are all over town. Some are even here in our park. When we went to dinner last night, we drove all over to see as many as we could.
This 50's Oldsmobile is like one that my older brother had when he went off to college. His was pink and white with white interior. He couldn't stand for us little kids (Sam and me) to get in his car because we night mess up his white seats.
But my favorite one was this 1949 Chevy convertible. (as old as me) It was parked in front of an ice cream shop in one of the small beach towns on Hwy 1. There was a sign in the window and a newspaper article about the owner. Mary Ellen Wise wanted to go to Cal Poly but they only accepted men so she had to go to San Jose State. On trips home, she rode the bus back and forth and sometimes when her Mom came into San Jose for shopping, she would arrange the trip so she could take her daughter with her. On one of these trips, they stopped half way home to get a snack and across the street was a Chevrolet dealership that had this car on the floor in the window. They both admired it and talked about what fun it would be to own one like it. The next thing, the Mom was buying it. Mary Ellen said that she got so much attention at school because most girls did not have their own cars in those days and certainly not a convertible. She got lots of dates and even her husband of 40 years would say that it is the first thing that attracted him to her. She became a kindergarten teacher for 35 years and continued to drive the car for many of those. She replaced the seats with tiger-print vinyl and had it repainted 20 years ago. It is a beautiful car. Her kids enjoyed riding in and driving it around town and now grandkids drive it occasionally. It is understood within the family that the car is never to be sold because Granny wants her great grandkids to be able to ride in her car, too. What a great family story!!!
